Players of Nnewi based side FC Ifeanyi Ubah have appealed to the club management to make good its promise of paying outstanding match bonuses and salaries.
This appeal is coming after the players threatened to go on strike before the game against Sunshine Stars where they lost 1-0.
One of the players who preferred not to be named said the financial situation of the team is very poor and the players are struggling to make ends meet.
“Our team has been in a financial crisis and we have been struggling to survive. It’s so sad and even our last home win match bonus has not been paid,” he said.
Reports reaching Freekicknaija claim that the old players were last paid salaries for the month of December 2019, meaning that no payment of 2020 was made.
The new players were given ten thousand naira each and have not been paid salary since they joined the clun. FC Ifeanyi Ubah players usually survive on match bonuses, but the situation has hit a new low due to inability of the team to pay a home winning bonus of #15,000.
After their home win in the first game of the Nigeria Professional Football League 2020/21 season, the team found it difficult to honour their away gane against Sunshine Stars.
Still speaking on the basis of anonymity, the player stressed that him and his colleagues are dedicated and are willing to put in their best even after so many others left. He, however, called on the proprietor of the club Senator Ifeanyi Ubah to look into the matter.
Hear him: “A lot of players have left the team because of the financial crisis. But we have some new players and I believe we can perfome well because everyone is hungry for success. We want to beg the owner of the club to help us out because we have the quality to face the battle in the NPFL.”
The club currently occupies the 11th position on the log having won one game and lost one.
It is a known fact that the owner of the team Senator Ifeanyi Ubah is vying for the seat of governor in Anambra state come 2021.
