Golden Eaglets off to Instanbul for Invitational tourney

Nigeria national U-17 team, the Golden Eaglets will depart the shores of the country on Wednesday (today) for the 2019 CAF/UEFA Assist tournament holding in Istanbul, Turkey, this month.

The eight nation tournament will feature teams drawn from three Confederations which they will use to fine-tune preparations for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil.

The Eaglets will tackle the host country Turkey, Senegal and Guatemala in Group 1 of the competition that will be staged from 20 to 28th September 2019.

Head coach of the team, Manu Garba told the The Punch that he intent to use the tournament as a test game ahead of the U17 World Cup.

“I know we’ve got a good squad and a lot of really good young talent,” Garba said.

“First is to be competitive at the tournament and it’s also a test for the players to rise to the level expected as well.

“I think the motivation should be there (for youngsters to breakthrough), but I understand that if a door can seem locked for a long time then it can affect young players.

“I have spoken about it to them and I will make it very clear going in that the door is open if you prove that you are good enough, but I do think the motivation should be there.”
