Despite taking an early lead against Rivers United which ensured all points for Plateau United, Andrew Ikefe said Rivers United gave them a run for their money

An early strike from Ibrahim Mustapha three minute into the start earned Plateau United a 1-0 victory on match day 18 of the Nigeria Professional Football League at the new Jos stadium on Sunday evening.

Ibrahim Mustapha capitalized on Rivers United defensive lapses to nod in from Daniel Itodo quick throw.

Sunday victory ensured Plateau United returned to the summit with 32 points from 18 games played.

“It was a difficult game for us. “We had to maintain the early goal we scored so see us through.

“Rivers United came out strong with lot of enthusiasm but the early goal we scored gave us an edge which we maintain till the final whistle.

“We had to defend deep since we couldn’t add to our score line. It was a game we couldn’t afford to loss because we wanted to get back to the top of the league after Lobi Stars lost on Saturday to Jigawa Golden Stars in Kano.

“We knew anything less than a win will not be accepted by our fans and we took that challenge upon us because Rivers are not a push over team but we were more determined to win and we did,” said Ikefe.
