AFCON 2021: Four Players Who Could Have Helped Nigeria Win The Title

It is no longer news that Super Eagles of Nigeria will not claim their fourth AFCON title this year following their unceremonious exit from the ongoing TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations tournament that is taking place in Cameroon.

Nigeria were favorites to win the title after their first two games including the game against Guinea-Bissau. However, the 1-0 lost yesterday means an end to their fourth AFCON title dreams.

Meanwhile, there are four players that I believe could have made the dream become a reality if they were included in the squad.

1. Cyriel Dessers

It obvious that the Super Eagles lack a hitman that would be scoring for them in the course of the competition. From the four games that were played, no single player that scored up to two goals. Cyriel Dessers could have been the striker that would be getting the goals for Nigeria. I would say his non inclusion in the squad is partly responsible for Nigeria early exit from the tournament.

2. Akinkunmi Amoo

Nigeria needed a player like Amoo to excel but he was never given the opportunity. Amoo’s brilliance could have helped Nigeria to win the AFCON title for the fourth time.

3. Emmanuel Dennis

Dennis is another great player that could have helped the Super Eagles campaign if not that Watford withheld him from coming to the tournament.

4. Odion Ighalo

Just like Dennis, Odion Ighalo was also prevented from coming to the AFCON tournament by his Saudi Arabian club sides. I believe Ighalo could have achieved a similar feat to the one he did in the last edition of the competition.
