Coach Bonfrere berates tactics on Super Eagles CHAN elimination

Former Super Eagles coach Jo Bonfrere has blamed the tactical approach by the Super Eagles on Saturday’s CHAN 2020 elimination.

The 1996 Olympic gold winner who was a surprise guest at the Agege stadium watched from the sidelines as Nigeria laboured to a 2-0 win against the Sparrow Hawks of Togo in the return leg of the final round of the 2020 CHAN qualifiers.

He stated after the match that the eliminated Nigerian side put up a good fight, but their tactical approach to the game was suspect.

He reasoned that the Nigerian attackers were often making use of high balls against tall defenders of the Togolese who more than often had seven players defending.

“The Wingers were very good and were mesmerizing the Togolese defense, but they didn’t take advantage of that, rather deciding to play long balls that were ineffective.

The striker in front ought to have been substituted as he was not able to do something with passes given to him”Nigeria crashed out from the CHAN 2020 on 4-3 aggregate agaist the Togolese side after the first leg ended 4-1 in Lome.
