Ekiti SWAN Charge State Government To Improve Sport Facilities

Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN Ekiti State chapter has called on the State Government to as a matter of urgency improve sporting equipment and facilities for the State athletes.

The Association in it monthly meeting held at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday frowned at the dwindling state of sport in the State.

According to a communique issued by the Communique Drafting Committee signed by the Association secretary, Bisi Ogunleye read, “We (SWAN) called on Ekiti State government to look into the provision of sports facilities and equipment for the improvement of the State athletes.

“Government should also look into administration of other sports, with the aim of ensuring better and improved management.

“Sports journalists bemoaned the sorry state of the roofs of the spectators sitting terrace at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, Ado-Ekiti, the dangerous condition of the dilapidated weightlifting gymnasium, as well as other damaged and outdated equipment and facilities with a call on the government to do the needful.

Continuing, the communique reads, “The Association congratulated athletes and officials who represented the nation at the just concluded Commonwealth Games in England for their dedication, perseverance and patriotism in bringing honour to Nigeria.

“It also commended the efforts of the nation’s under-20 athletes to the just concluded competition in Colombia.

“The body called on Ekiti State government to look into the decline in performance of the state-owned football club, Ekiti United FC and find solution to its dwindling fortune, having finished second in 2021 season but struggling to avoid relegation in 2022.

“SWAN notes that Ekiti United has been facing series of administrative and management challenges in recent times, including but not limited to “failure to honour a NNL match at home in Ado Ekiti and pulling out of the National Aiteo Cup,” the communique reads.
