Rivers United suffer defeat in Aba

Victor Mboama scored the decisive goal as Enyimba International beat Rivers United 1-0 in a rescheduled Nigeria Professional Football League game decided in Aba on Thursday.

Enyimba dominated early on and nearly took the lead in deserved fashion when Mboama saw a fierce goal-bound drive kept out in brilliant fashion by the Rivera United goalkeeper, Ospino Egbe after he was played through by the lively Orok Gabriel in the ninth minute.

Mboama was looking extremely dangerous in the early on and came close to opening the scoring in the 18th minute when he swiveled on a sixpence in the United box before shooting over.

Enyimba continued to step on the accelerator and consistent pressure saw them win a free kick at the edge of the United penalty area in the 21st minute.

Mboama stepped up nerveless but shot without any real conviction. His effort was however on target and remarkably, it was fumbled by Ospino who looked on in shock as the hosts registered on the board in the 24th minute.

United improved afterwards, especially in the second half but failed to create too much to threaten Theophilus Afelokahai who really didn’t really have much to do all game long.

Technical Manager of Rivers United, Stanley Eguma cut a forlorn figure afterwards as he was left to ponder what might have been.“I am not happy about the game because this is a game we were noit supposed to lose,” Eguma said to www.riversunitedfc.com.ng.

“We missed a lot of scoring chances and we had converted them, the result would have been different,” he said.Rivers United who currently occupy 11th spot on the standings with nine points from six games will next meet Katsina United on Sunday in Port Harcourt.
