Why NFF Must Drag Watford To FIFA Over Emmanuel Dennis’ Absence For AFCON 2021

It is no longer news that Nigeria have been at a loggerheads with Watford management over the availability of in-form Nigerian striker, Emmanuel Dennis for the upcoming 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations tournament slated to take place in Cameroon.

It would be recalled that the striker was included in the 28 man final roaster for the biannual competition scheduled to begin with on January 9th.

However, just when the Super Eagles camp was open for the invited players to start arriving, Watford reportedly came up with an excuse stating that Dennis will not be available as the invitation letter came late and they can not be able to process his papers.

In an interview conducted by the Nigeria Football Federation, Austine Eguavoen stated that Watford are not being truthful with the whole issue. According to him, Watford threatened Emmanuel Dennis and that he had no option that to remain in the club despite his willingness to represent Nigeria at the AFCON.

I think the Nigeria Football Federation should not sit back and allow Watford to get away with this. The club does not have any right to withhold a player from representing his country in a major competition for whatever reasons. FIFA rule is clear about it. The NFF should as a matter of fact report this matter to FIFA so that it would serve as a lesson to other clubs.
